Canvas Issues
Canvas is used in many courses at IVC. Your whole course may be managed through Canvas or your instructor may have provided additional course materials. If you are taking an Online or Hybrid course, please take a look at Online Course Orientation.
For additional questions, please see the information below.
Starting with the Basics
- Logging in
- Login by going to IVC.edu and clicking Canvas at the top of the page. If you log in another way, it can cause issues with some external tools in Canvas, including Proctorio. The URL should always start with 'canvas.ivc.edu'.
- You must be enrolled in a course to login to Canvas
- It takes a least 4-6 hours after registering for your first class for you to be able to login to Canvas
- It can take up to the first day of class for you to be able to log in. This is dependent on at least one of your enrolled courses being published by your instructor.
- Make sure to log in with your username and not your full IVC email. Your username is the part before the @ sign of student your email.
- Ensure your computer and browser will work with Canvas.

Why don't I see my course(s) in Canvas?
There could be a couple of reasons why you don't see your course(s) in Canvas.
- Have you checked the "All Courses" section of Canvas? You can get there by clicking on "Courses" on the left and then going to "All Courses."
- Your Instructor hasn't released it yet. Your Instructor publishes the course when she/he is ready. If your Instructor has stated that the course has been published and you still don't see it, it may be that...
- There is a problem with your Registration. The Registrar will drop you from classes if you have issues that need to be dealt with, such as fees, vaccination certificates, etc.
- It is also possible that there is not an online component for your course. Not all courses at IVC use Canvas.
If you are still unable to find your course, and none of these circumstances apply, please contact the Help Desk at 949-451-5696.
I just registered, why do I get an "Unauthorized" error trying to access my course site?
Description of the problem: You just registered for a course and someone has sent you a link to the course. You can login to Canvas successfully, but then get the error below:
"Unauthorized. It appears that you don't have permission to access this page. Please make sure you're authorized to view this content. If you think you should be able to view this page, please use the "Help" link to notify support of the problem."
Cause: There is a delay between the time a student registers for a course and the time it takes for the student's account to be added to the course in Canvas. Or, you may have been sent a bad link.
Solution: Log in to the main site (https://canvas.ivc.edu), to see your dashboard, which contains the list your of courses.
It may take up to 48 hours for Canvas to get updated, if you continue to have this error over 48 hours, please contact the helpdesk at 949-451-5696.
Why do I get an "Unauthorized" error when clicking a link in my course?
Description of the problem: In Canvas, when following a link to a file, instead of downloading the file, an error message appears:
"Unauthorized. It appears that you don't have permission to access this page. Please make sure you're authorized to view this content. If you think you should be able to view this page, please use the "Help" link to notify support of the problem."
Cause: An instructor has uploaded a file to a course and linked to that file from a different page. Later, they delete the file, possibly to upload a updated version. Any links to the original file will be broken, and will result in the error message.
Solution: There is likely a new version of the file added to the course. If you have access to the "Files" page in the course, try to find the file there. Otherwise, contact the course instructor about the missing file.

What is the Browser Cache and why should it be cleared regularly?
Explanation:
Canvas is a composition of thousands of files which need to download into your "Browser Cache" to display the content in your browser.
Browsers try to do their part to speed up the loading process. The first time you visit a site, the browser will save pieces of the site, because the browser can display the files stored in its cache much faster than it can pull fresh files from a server. The next time you visit that site, the cached files will help cut down the page load time.
Why should we clear our Cache?
Canvas gets updated regulary for bug fixes and adding new features, also you and your Instructors will make changes to your courses as you complete your coursework.
If these changes update a file that your browser has cached, it’s going to keep serving the old, cached version of the file and you won’t see the most recent changes. This is also when, you may encounter browser errors, buttons missing on the page, odd things not working in Canvas, etc.
Clearing the Cache and Cookies in a browser helps fix these issues.
How do I change the language preference in Canvas?
Canvas can read the Web Browser's language setting, so if the Web Browser has a foreign language enabled as the default language on the computer, then those settings will get picked up by the Canvas site and display text in the selected default language.
You can also override any browser settings by following the instructions at:
Changing the settings on your computer or browser, is upto the student to determine, as these setting vary depending on the Browser, and Operating System.
